Our Lineage

Our yoga classes are derived from the Ghosh Hatha yoga lineage made famous by Bikram Choudhury.

Bishnu Charan Ghosh, brother of Yogananda, established Ghosh's College of Physical Education program in 1923 in Calcutta, India. During this time he developed a system for creating optimal health by combining strength training with yoga.  Sweaty Buddha carries on the spirit of his legacy by creating dynamic therapeutic classes that merge the wisdom of Ghosh's lineage with the science of today.

Bikram is a 75 minute beginning level class that consists of 26 postures derived from the Ghosh lineage. Practiced in a room heated up to 105 degrees, the series was created for total body health.  The heated room helps to warm up your muscles, prevent injury, allows for a deeper workout and cleanses the body of toxins. The body is worked from the inside out, addressing every bone, muscle, organ and ligament. Class is designed for beginners and is appropriate for people of all ages, body types, and levels of experience, including those with injuries who are looking to heal the body.

"You are never too old, never too bad, never too late and never too sick to start from scratch once again"

                                       -Bishnu Ghosh

Bikram Silent

The important thing to know about this class is that no instruction is offered and therefore it is not as beginner-friendly as the famous Bikram yoga class. This follow-the-leader style class is made up of the same sequence as our Bikram class accompanied by music, allowing the student to explore the postures on a different level.

Not recommended for first-time students although beginners are never turned away.

"What the mind can conceive the mind and body can achieve."

-Mary Jarvis
